What Is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is, simply, energy provided by the sun.

Electricity can be produced using Photovoltaic (PV) cells. Simply put, these cells are made from materials which exhibit the “photovoltaic effect”, as in, when sunshine hits the PV cell, the photons of light excite the electrons in the cell and cause them to flow and generate electricity.

Solar energy produces no emissions but produces electricity when it is in demand – during the day.

PV Panels are being used increasingly in New Zealand for households, businesses and schools, along with many other applications, as New Zealanders continue to look at ways to take control of their power costs and reduce their reliance on electricity retailers.
